Title: The Four
Size: 15 x 10 cm Medium: corrugated and colored cardboard, Elmers glue, hot glue Completion: December 2022 Exhibition textMy sculpture work is inspired by Natalia Kutova's "Blossom." Taking inspiration from her impasto technique and symbolic meanings behind flowers and trees, I created a sculpture from cardboard which allowed me to explore the 3-dimensional effect of cardboard and meanings behind similar plants.

two different sides with color together. I also discussed the types of flowers I would imitate with my work. After thinking about roses, daisy's, and some unknown flowers, I decided to experiment with a mixture of both types of cardboard.
ProcessI decided to incorporate these colors into my flowers to emulate a similar sense of meaning which Kutova puts into her work. I then separated some of the colored parts of the cardboard from their corrugation. From there, I made different forms of petals which had colors on both sides.
ExperimentationI ended up peeling the colored paper off of the corrugated side of the cardboard and using the corrugation for the middles of flowers and other parts of my piece.
CritiqueSimilarities:
My sculpture and Natalia Kutova's painting Blossom are similar in the subject matter at hand. Both of our pieces feature flowers and resemble the natural presence of flowers in nature. Kutova's painting and my sculpture also are similar in the use of color. Both works contain mainly warm colors, including many variations of yellow, red, and orange. The colors in both allude to the warmness of flowers and the comfort found in their symbolization. Both my sculpture and Kutova's painting are rich in texture. While my work contains corrugated cardboard and smooth petals, Kutova's work includes large splotches of oil paint. Both works contribute to the texture of the flowers in the pieces. Differences: One major difference in my work and Natalia Kutova's Blossom is the medium used to create the work. While Kutova's work is an oil painting, my piece is a cardboard sculpture. This leads to different techniques in how to create the resemblance of flowers. For example, Kutova applies an impasto technique to achieve texture while I use corrugated cardboard. Our pieces are also different in terms of purpose. Kutova leaves the interpretation of the work to the audience observing it. However, the purpose of my piece is to symbolize the ease and calmness felt after going through struggle. There is also a sense of contrast in my piece that is not necessarily seen in that of Kutova's. Both pieces have slight contrasts in warm colors, however Kutova's work does not feature a variety of flowers. ReflectionWhile I have worked with cardboard before, I have never created a sculpture which is based on a two-dimensional board. I believe my previous experimentation with cardboard helped me a lot to understand the different types of cardboard and their strengths and weaknesses. I knew when to use corrugated cardboard and when to use normal for the flowers and their petals. One challenge of the project was that I did not realize how much time it would take to pay attention to close details and precision. I was also unsure of exactly how to attach the cardboard petals to the two-dimensional board. However, overall, I believe I was able to use color (specifically warm colors such as yellow red and) to signify the calmness and ease following anxiety and struggles in life.
ACT QuestionsClearly explain how you are able to identify the cause effect relationship between your inspiration and its effect on your artwork?
My inspiration artwork is Natalia Kutova's Blossom. Her work features flowers and uses an impasto technique to give the effect of the flowers coming out of the streets or at least his hands. I use a similar application of texture to achieve the illusion of depth. What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration? Meanings exist in art, however it is possible for a specific piece of art to lack a specific intended meaning from the artist. Instead, meanings of art can exist in solely the interpretation of the audience. What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, culture, etc. while you researched your inspiration? We all have our own reactions to art and our own ideas about what the art could mean or what value the art has. In some cases, we are left to find our own meaning instead of being given one. What is the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?. Flowers are an occurrence taken from nature that can often take on a strong metaphorical meaning. Colors and textures also contribute to this meaning of flowers. What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research? I inferred that Natalia Kutova creates a meaning for her artwork inside of her head, however she does not share it with her audience so they can form their own opinions of the work.
